If you've started looking for a wedding videographer in Scotland, you've probably discovered that prices are all over the place.

You can find someone offering wedding video coverage for hundreds of pounds, while other filmmakers charge several thousand. So what are you actually paying for — and how much should you budget for wedding videography in Scotland?

The slightly annoying answer is: it depends enormously on what you're getting.

But let's make that answer a bit more useful.

What does wedding videography cost in Scotland?

Across the UK, couples can expect to see wedding videography prices ranging from under £1,000 for limited or simpler coverage to £4,000+ for experienced filmmakers offering extensive coverage, multiple videographers and more substantial finished films.

That makes comparing two prices surprisingly difficult.

A £1,200 package with one videographer for six hours and a short highlights film isn't really the same product as a £2,500 package with two videographers for the full day, drone coverage, a highlights film, full ceremony and speeches, teasers and a longer finished film.

So before deciding whether a quote is expensive (or suspiciously cheap), look at what you're actually being offered.

What affects the cost of a wedding videographer?

How long they're at your wedding

Some packages cover only the ceremony or part of the day.

Full-day coverage might begin with morning preparations and continue through your ceremony, reception, speeches, first dance and into the evening.

More coverage means more filming — but it also means considerably more footage to organise, edit, colour and sound mix afterwards.

One videographer or two

This can make a huge difference.

Weddings have an irritating habit of happening in several places at once.

While one of you is getting ready, so is the other. While you're exchanging vows, your partner's reaction matters — but so do your parents' reactions. During the speeches, there are things happening at the tables that you can't see from the top table.

Having two videographers means we can capture different perspectives and simultaneous moments rather than having one person attempting to teleport around your wedding.

Sadly, we haven't yet found a camera that includes teleportation.

What films you actually receive

This is probably one of the biggest things to check when comparing wedding videography packages.

Does the price include only a short highlights film?

Do you receive your ceremony and speeches?

Is there a longer film of the day?

Are social-media edits included?

How quickly do you receive anything after the wedding?

Two packages with similar prices can contain completely different amounts of finished work.

Why does wedding videography cost so much when you're only there for one day?

Because the wedding day is only the visible bit.

Filming is followed by backing up footage, organising it, synchronising cameras and audio, choosing music, editing, colour grading, sound editing, revisions, exporting and delivering the finished films.

There's also the less glamorous side: professional cameras, lenses, audio equipment, drones, insurance, music licensing, storage, backups and enough batteries to survive a small apocalypse.

And weddings don't come with retakes.

If something happens during your ceremony, speech or first dance, we have one opportunity to capture it. Professional wedding videography isn't just about owning a nice camera; a large part of what you're paying for is the experience and preparation required to reliably capture an unpredictable live event.

What does Olive & Thistle wedding videography cost?

We believe pricing should be straightforward.

Our all-inclusive full wedding videography package is £2,250.

That currently includes:

• Two videographers from preparations until the third dance

• Fully insured drone filming where conditions and restrictions allow

• A 3–5 minute highlights film

• A full 45–90 minute wedding film containing your ceremony and speeches

• A 30-second teaser within two weeks of your wedding

• A 60-second vertical social-media teaser

We also offer elopement films, twilight elopement packages and single-videographer packages from £1,500.

Rather than building a package around the minimum amount we can deliver, our full package is designed for couples who want the story of the whole day preserved.

Is it worth paying for two wedding videographers?

Obviously we're slightly biased here.

But there's a practical reason our full package includes two filmmakers.

It allows us to be in two places at once during preparations, capture multiple perspectives during your ceremony and speeches, and film reactions and interactions that might otherwise be missed.

It also gives us more freedom to work unobtrusively. Instead of one videographer constantly moving around trying to capture everything, we can position ourselves carefully and let the wedding happen around us.

For our documentary style of filming, that's particularly important.

What should you ask before booking a wedding videographer?

Don't compare suppliers on price alone. Ask:

• How many hours of coverage are included?

• Will there be one videographer or two?

• What finished films will we receive?

• Are the full ceremony and speeches included?

• Is drone filming included?

• Are travel costs included or charged separately?

• How long will our films take to arrive?

• Can we watch examples of complete wedding films, not just highlight reels?

• What happens if the videographer is ill or equipment fails?

And perhaps most importantly: do you actually like their films?

There isn't much point finding an amazing deal on something you'll never want to watch.

Should we book a wedding videographer?

We're probably the least impartial people you could ask.

But photography and film preserve different things.
